The second book with Weaver's antihero, David Raker, sees him back on form as he investigates the disappearance of 17-year-old Megan Carver. The plot deepens and the mystery intensifies as the disappearance seems to be bringing back cases from over 100 years ago.

This is my fourth Tim Weaver story, and I have to say this is up there with his better ones. The introduction to Raker with Chasing the Dead was a bit shaky, whilst this one certainly picks up and chips away at his character even more. Raker's backstory, whilst not as fleshed out or as interesting as say Rowling's Cormoran Strike, the backstory is steadily improving.

The plot was far more interesting than its predecessor, whilst Chasing the Dead had an almost instant reveal mid-act, this was a mystery with far more build up, and certainly with a far less sensational and more fitting end.

The relationship between Raker and other characters is becoming far more interesting, and is starting to resemble his later work, such as Never Coming Back. The introduction to Colm Healy is one of the more interesting points in the book, Healy is far less calculated and far more spontaneous than Raker, making scenes with him more intense and impacting to read.

Overall, Weaver is certainly improving with each piece he writes. He is without a doubt a great writer, and he is certainly shaping up to be a fantastic crime writer.
